The birth of Waldorf kindergarten
historical review and first methodological references

This article addresses the birth circumstances of Waldorf kindergarten in Germany throughout the twenties – twentieth century. It talks about the insistence of Rudolf Steiner (1861-1925), precursor of Waldorf pedagogy, so that this work was born. It describes the founding of the first kindergarten linked to the first Waldorf school in Stuttgart, encompassing its two initial stages: the first in 1920 as a rather restrict and fugacious practical experience; the second, in 1926, which starts a lasting and structured work. Elisabeth von Grunelius (1895-1989) is the teacher who leads both phases. Other kindergartens that emerge during this same period, inspired by anthroposophy, are also presented as private initiatives detached from Waldorf schools. Elisabeth von Grunelius’s biography is covered, as well as the methodological guidelines developed by her for early childhood care, based on her pioneering work.
